Tuesday: Day 2 at the work site

Today we had lots of fun at Shiloh again and helping out. We started to paint and by the end of the week we hope to finish painting the church for former inmates. We got to use these massive rollers that were super long so we could get all the way to the top of the church. It was much hotter today but the clouds helped us stay cool enough throughout the day. For lunch we went to this pond to eat and we had an amazing view of the mountains. The scenery here is very beautiful. There also is a cinnamon roll shop across the street so of course we helped ourself to some of those. Later that night we had a chapel and we were blessed to here the testimony of a leader there. It was very impactful and she shared the struggles she had as a child which included loosing her mom at a young age because of cancer. So far it’s been a great experience for me here and I’ve grown and learned a lot about how I can serve, be grateful, and strengthen my relationship with God. At the end of the night we had some free time and we played some cup pong. Finally, Mr Hendrikse went to go get Justin from the airport because he flew in from Wisconsin.

Tuesday on the worksite went very well. Our job today was to begin painting the Shiloh Chapel building exterior. We are painting it off-white.  Before painting, Sam, Renee, and Brandon patched up some holes in the walls. Some of us had super long roller poles that reached all the way up to the top of the building. While most of the guys painted, the girls worked on staining pallet boards for a project inside the chapel where they will be decorating the walls.  Before lunch we stopped at a cinnamon roll bakery across the street from Shiloh chapel. We enjoyed them, but mine and a few other people’s were frozen solid. Mine actually had ice that I had to scrape off of it! Luckily we were able to use the microwave in the chapel to defrost them.

The day went pretty smoothly but after lunch it got super hot (around 90 degrees) and everyone was a little bit out of sorts and ready for a shower.  When we got back to the church we all rested for a bit, had dinner, and played cup pong until bedtime. Mr Hendrikse went and picked up Justin Gartman who arrived in Denver around midnight.  They got back to the church  safely around 1:30 am.  Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers!

After looking at these to pictures (my location on the top pic and Justin's location on the bottom pic) you might wonder why it took us 15+ minutes to find each other.

Justin was telling me he was seeing buses and taxis. I didn't see a single one.  I was beeping my horn and asking if he heard it.  He said no.  I was standing next to a young lady who couldn't connect with her dad.  She was having the same issue.  I was so frustrated that out locations looked exactly the same but we couldn't see each other.  Finally, we discovered he was right above me.  Apparently the buses and taxis move through on the road above where I was standing.  After we figured it out, all was well and we made it back to the church around 1:30 AM.  It's great to have Justin join us.  Looking forward to tomorrow!
